Metal Deploye

DOMUS Shopping Centre (Rosny-sous-bois)

In 2006, the architects Myard & Raoult designed and delivered the DOMUS in Rosny-sous-Bois, outside Paris, the Ile-de-France's biggest shopping centre for household goods.

This concrete, aluminium and "glass liner" makes a mark on the Parisian urban landscape with its impressive dimensions (400x100 metres). The architects chose METAL DEPLOYE to clad the outside of the building, the ramps to the top of the silo and to cover over the car park.

Over 1,400 sheets of unwrought aluminium expanded metal were needed for this, to cover a total surface of 4,250 m². Expanded metal  is a unique material in that it gives the metal lightness and transparency without in any way detracting from the solidity of the whole structure.

The architects were very clever and this was made possible by choosing expanded metal, because the façade serves a dual function as the signs for the shops inside DOMUS are fixed to it. In 2006 the French Design Institute recognized this achievement and awarded it the Janus business prize.
